MultiChoice answers rivals with more sports channels

Pay-TV service provider Multichoice DStv has responded to competition with more sports channels for budget DSTV subscribers in a move meant to ward off rivals.

The pay-TV firm announced that beginning August 8, customers subscribing to the Family package will get access to premier league overflow matches on SuperSport 8 (SS8) channel. Subscribers on DStv Premium, Compact Plus and Compact will have access to Premier League and La Liga overflow matches still on SS8.

The firm will also make available SuperSport 10 to all subscribers who will be entitled to one live Premier League, La Liga, UEFA Champions League and Europa League match every week in addition to athletics, rugby 7’s and e-sport.

Kenya’s pay television market has become increasingly competitive with the entry of over-the-top (OTT) content providers such as Iflix, Netflix, Showmax (owned by Multichoice), and Amazon Prime.

“Customers are our number one priority. We listen to them to understand their changing lives, the pressures they face and what matters most to them. Our new content and offering stresses this commitment to deliver value to the customer and put them at the heart of all the decisions we make,” said MultiChoice Kenya, corporate communications Manager, Philip Wahome.

The firm also slashed the cost of the decoder by 22 per cent to Sh5,000, cost that will cover Zappa high definition decoder box, cabling, satellite dish and installation fee in addition to a one month free viewing of the select product which include, Access, Compact, Compact Plus, Family or Premium bouquet.

This is the latest effort by the pay- TV to attract more customers after it bundled it services with Telkom Kenya in March.
