Turkana politician charged in another Ksh. 8M con case

The Turkana county politician recently charged with obtaining Ksh 24,263,780 by false pretenses before a Mombasa court, has been slapped with a fresh similar charge.

Simon Ekai Ewoi returned before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo to face the fifth count of obtaining Ksh 8,049,000 from Lydiah Mary Munyoki.

Odhiambo heard that Ewoi sought the money by falsely pretending that his assets had been frozen by the Central Bank of Kenya and needed facilitation to unfreeze them.

He allegedly told the complaint that he will in return buy her a parcel of land, a fact he knew to be false.

The charge sheet stated that he committed the offence on diverse dates between 11 January 2022 and 18 July 2022 in Mombasa county.

He denied the charge and was released on Ksh 4 million surety bond and the court directed the matter, being prosecuted by Senior Prosecution Counsel Barbara Sombo mentioned on 24 April 2024.

At the same time, the court mentioned the previous case, where he is alleged to have obtained Ksh 24,263,780 by false pretenses connected to the gold and mercury trade.

The court directed the pre-trial of the matter be conducted on 24 April with the accused still in custody after failing to meet the court’s bond term.

He was admitted to a Ksh 7 million bond with a surety of similar amount and two guarantors with clear details of their residences.

Ewoi pleaded not guilty to the four counts of obtaining money by false pretenses, contrary to Section 313 of the penal code.

The court heard that the accused and his accomplices obtained a total sum of Ksh 24,263,780 from the four complaints by falsely pretending that he was in a position to partner with them in the gold and mercury trade.
