Kakamega Governor urges artisanal gold miners to suspend operations

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has issued a plea to individuals involved in mining activities within Kakamega County, urging them to suspend operations temporarily due to heightened risks posed by heavy rainfall.

Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day event in Kakamega, the Governor underscored the importance of prioritizing safety, particularly as quarries have become increasingly hazardous amid the ongoing downpours.

In response to the pressing issue of flooding in the county, Governor Barasa expressed concern for families residing along the Nzoia River, highlighting that the disaster management team is actively assessing the situation to determine necessary interventions.

Furthermore, he called upon journalists to assume a pivotal role in raising public awareness of environmental conservation.

Emphasizing the significance of disseminating information that fosters responsible environmental stewardship, Governor Barasa urged the media to play an active role in this endeavour.
